Abstract:

The effect of densification under high pressure (up to 8 GPa) on Pr 3+ doped glasses with
composition xPbO-(1-x)GeO 2 , with x ranging from 40 to 50, will be discussed. The synthesis of
the samples was done by conventional melt and quenching technique. Glasses were shaped as
cylinders of 3 mm diameter and 2.6 mm height and processed in a large volume high pressure
toroidal apparatus using lead as pressure transmitting medium at 4 GPa and 7.7 GPa during 15
min at room temperature. The structural changes induced by pressure were investigated by
thermal analysis, Raman and infrared spectroscopies. Absorption and luminescence spectra of
Pr 3+ ions were used as local probes to evaluate the changes induced by densification. The results
indicated pressure dependent irreversible structural changes.
